Adverse life events–including adverse childhood events (ACEs)–can affect us throughout our lifespan. As the number of these events increases, so does the risk for negative health and diminished well-being. This is true for both caregivers and residents of long-term care. However, even in the face of trauma, people still possess an ability to return to being healthier and more hopeful, with less caregiver burnout.

How much of what is offered to people living in long term care communities is fake?
Much is at stake with fake. Let’s call it out and consider why we think it’s okay. We’ll talk about examples, like using fake pets and babies, mock tails and near beer, the folding of fake towels and whether we are asking the right questions in thinking about if and when to use them. Let’s compare it to real and what each says about how we care for and treat older adults. We’ll be honest, our bias is to encourage all to move more in the direction of real life rather than fake. Let’s compare what our goals are when we are fake and contrast it with what we want for people – real living.

As required by 198.005 RSMo and 19 CSR 30-86.047, residents of Assisted Living Facilities are required to undergo a community-based assessment performed by an appropriately trained and qualified individual. This individual must complete a DHSS approved 24- hour training program prior to performing resident assessments. The MALA ALF Assessment Training satisfies this regulatory requirement.

SNF PPS: New Patient Driven Payment Model Webpage
On October 1, 2019, the new Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM) is replacing Resource Utilization Group, Version IV (RUG-IV) for the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Prospective Payment System (PPS). This workshop will look at the RAI process from the beginning to the end. The MDS is used for both a clinical assessment and a financial assessment and this workshop will discuss the rules on scheduling these assessments and meeting the requirements individually and combined. From coding the MDS, we will then look at the CAA to care plan process.
This workshop is for individuals in long-term care who coordinate and/or code the MDS. Typically, this is an RN or LPN with the title of MDS Coordinator or Care Plan Coordinator. This is also for the DON or ADM who needs a better understanding of the complexity of the RAI process.

This one-day workshop will begin with how to gain access to and read the MDS reports from CASPER in order to self-audit your RAI process. The completion of the MDS is becoming more and more difficult and confusing. This workshop will help the MDS Coordinator and other members of the interdisciplinary team to understand the admitting criteria and the ongoing documentation needs of the Medicare resident. The RAI process in relationship to Medicare is also confusing and errors can be a financial nightmare for facilities. This workshop will help clear up the confusion surrounding the process.
This workshop is geared towards those individuals working in long-term care who have a leadership role such as the ADM, DON, ADON, or MDS Coordinator.

Nationwide Effort to Improve Quality of Care in Nursing Homes
As part of its continued commitment to the nation’s most vulnerable populations, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has launched the Civil Money Penalty Reinvestment Program (CMPRP), a three-year effort to reduce adverse events, improve staffing quality and improve dementia care in nursing homes. This effort is funded by the Federal portion of CMPs to conduct activities that support and protect nursing home residents.
Through this program, CMS and its contractor will develop and implement evidence-based interventions, activities tools, and resources help to improve dementia care, reduce adverse events, and improve staffing quality. Staffing quality includes areas such as reducing turnover, improving tenure, and enhancing general staff performance. Additionally, the CMPRP will support projects for resident and family councils, develop and maintain the ability to provide temporary management of a nursing home, and support activities to protect residents during facility closures. Lastly, this program will support efforts to administer, monitor, and evaluate the effectiveness of CMP projects implemented throughout the country.
