NIOSH’s Second EHMR Federal Register Notice Webinar

Wednesday, November 18, 2020 1:00 PM EDT – 2:00 PM EDT
NIOSH’s Second Elastomeric Half-Mask Respirator (EHMR) Federal Register Notice Webinar

Elastomeric half mask respirators (EHMRs) are reusable respirators that may be worn in a healthcare setting and supplement the supply of disposable respirators available to healthcare workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-in coordination with the Strategic National Stockpile-posted a Federal Register Notice (FRN) titled “A National Elastomeric Half Mask Respirator (EHMR) Strategy for Use in Healthcare Settings During an Infectious Disease Outbreak/Pandemic”.

Through this FRN, NIOSH is seeking input regarding the national distribution plan of purchased EHMRs, as well as identifying potential organizations interested in receiving a portion of these EHMRs with the commitment to provide a report of user acceptability and feasibility of implementation.

NIOSH is seeking organizations including, but not limited to:

  • Hospital systems, individual hospitals, and/or specific hospital units (i.e., emergency department, intensive care units)
  • Outpatient care settings (i.e., offices, clinics, home care, urgent care, rehab centers)
  • Long term care facilities
  • Dental practices
  • First responder organizations (i.e., police, fire, EMS)

To learn more about how your organization can participate in this effort, please join us for a webinar on November 18 from 1:00-2:00pm (ET). NIOSH will provide an overview of EHMRs, a summary of the FRN, expectations of potential participants, next steps, and answer any questions you may have. Registration for the webinar is here.

The Nursing Home COVID-19 Action Network ECHO

The Nursing Home COVID-19 Action Network ECHO is kicking off the week of November 9, 2020 and you are invited to participate!

Medicare and/or Medicaid certified nursing homes that actively participate in the Network can receive up to $6,000 in compensation, along with free CME/CNE/LNHA credits for participating staff.

The Nursing Home COVID-19 Action Network ECHO will address the following goals:

  • Keep the virus from entering nursing homes where it has not entered
  • Identify residents and staff who have been infected with the virus early
  • Prevent the spread of the virus between staff, residents and visitors
  • Provide safe and appropriate care to residents with mild and asymptomatic cases
  • Ensure staff have the knowledge, skills and confidence to implement best-practice safety measures to protect residents and themselves
  • Reduce social isolation for residents, families, and staff during these difficult times

The Missouri Telehealth Network (MTN) at the University of Missouri is collaborating with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Project ECHO and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) to advance improvements in COVID-19 preparedness, safety and infection control in nursing homes.

Our goal is to recruit up to 105 nursing homes to participate in this virtual community of practice, where nursing home staff can engage with experts and their peers and share cases for real-time discussion and advice.

MTN will be holding several informational webinars next week to explain the project in further detail, and to answer any questions the organizations may have. Below are links register for each of the webinars. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

QIPMO – A New CAT in Town

*We’re hoping to gather some more information from this side of LTC, so if you could please fill out our survey so we can learn how to further help you, we’d appreciate it greatly – www.surveymonkey.com/r/CATCOVID.*

COVID-19 has changed our lives in so many ways. Life in long-term care will never be the same. QIPMO has been working with nursing homes in MO for over 20 years. During that time, it has grown from nurses helping guide MDS coordinators and DONs through the ever-changing landscape of long-term care. QIPMO now includes an administrator extension helping the facility’s NHA to navigate the administrative issues. The year 2020 will go down in history as one of the hardest years of our experience. We will come out on the other side stronger, but I am sure we will have horror stories to share as well as celebrations and accomplishments.

But there are other types of facilities that take care of the aging population. We’re talking Residential Care Facilities, Assisted Living Communities, and Independent Living Facilities. Who is there to help them? Never fear! QIPMO has now added yet another expansion service to help these communities – the CAT Team (COVID Accountability Team). For those who have been around the industry, the names will likely sound familiar: Sharon Thomas (retired QIPMO nurse) is covering survey regions 3, 4, and 5; Carol Siem (semi-retired QIPMO nurse) is covering regions 6 and 7; and the new kid on the block is Rob Siem (yep… Carol’s husband who is also a nurse – they’ve been together for 44 years and he understands long-term care) who will be covering regions 1 and 2. Please see this document for further details.

We are to help this group of facilities in navigating the reopening in these rough waters. Our contact information is:
Sharon Thomas – thomassg@missouri.edu
Carol Siem – siemc@missouri.edu
Rob Siem – rws266@missouri.edu

Just like QIPMO, we’re a free, non-regulatory, service to help answer questions!

MDS Changes for 10-1-20

Missouri opted to collect PDPM HIPPS codes on OBRA assessments with an ARD of 10/1/20 or later. This means that SNFs and NFs in Missouri need to complete additional items on OBRA assessments not combined with a Medicare assessment. Additional items include:

  • GG0130 Self-Care items;
  • GG0170 Mobility items;
  • I0020 and I0020B Primary Medical Condition items;
  • J2100 Recent Surgery item. If J2100 is checked yes, J2300-J5000 are to be completed.

Training: QIPMO provided a webinar on 9/21/20 where Stacey Bryan, Missouri’s State RAI Coordinator, went over MDS changes for 10-1-20. To view a recording of this webinar please go to https://nursinghomehelp.org/event/september-monthly-webinar/. Please note, the RAI Manual pages to review for examples of diagnoses in each medical condition category for item I0020 is I-2 and I-3, not I-12 which is referenced in the webinar.

FAQ Document: Below is a FAQ document concerning the MDS changes for Missouri this October. This document will be updated as needed. The date a question and answer is added to the document will be beneath each answer.

N95 Info

Fit Under Fire: Situational Strategies to Achieve the Best Respirator Fit During Crisis

To aid healthcare facilities experiencing shortages of N95 respirators due to high demand across the nation, CDC developed the Strategies for Optimizing the Supply of N95 Respirators in Healthcare Settings which provides options on how to optimize supplies of disposable N95 filtering facepiece respirators (commonly called “N95 respirators”) in healthcare settings when there is limited supply. Proper fit of N95s is critical to your infection control/respiratory protection program.

HAI-Infection Prevention on the Frontlines: Back to the Basics – in the Midst of a Global Pandemic

July 27 – September 6, 2020: ON DEMAND

Frontline nurses care for patients of all ages, across multiple care settings, with myriad health issues – not just those with infectious disease processes. It is a challenge to stay current with the latest evidence-based knowledge regarding infection prevention and COVID-19 has made this even more demanding. And depending on the practice setting, frontline nurses may have vastly different levels of institutional support and available resources to meet this demand.

The purpose of this conference is to enhance the capacity of frontline nurses to provide exemplary care to individuals with infectious diseases by focusing on the basics – which are applicable to all patients and always changing – and to demonstrate the profound impact an individual caregiver who practices from a proven base of evidence can have on patient outcomes. Linkages to COVID-19 are integrated throughout.

Be Infection Control Survey Ready: Join the Health Quality Innovation Network’s Office Hours Series

The Health Quality Innovation Network (HQIN), the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) for Missouri, is hosting an office hours series to support survey readiness and help nursing homes be responsive to identified opportunities, survey deficiencies and CMS enhanced enforcement actions. Each 30-minute session will demonstrate how to apply quality improvement principles to your infection control and prevention program and provide turnkey resources and tools to address gaps and drive improvement in your facility. A panel of nurses, infection preventionists and quality improvement professionals also will be available to answer questions.

The series begins July 14, 2020 and will cover the following topics:

July 14, 2020: Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
Facilities have worked hard to assess their infection control programs. But do you know the reason for the gaps or breakdowns in your program? We will share the HQIN QAPI RCA resource, which compliments the CMS QAPI RCA Guide.

July 28, 2020: Infection Prevention Action Plans
Once you complete the RCA process, then you must develop a plan of action. We will share the HQIN Infection Prevention Action Plan Templates. These templates compliment the CDC Infection Control Assessment tool. We will provide you with a template for key categories of improvement, i.e., hand hygiene, surveillance, environmental hygiene, etc.

August 11, 2020: Data Collection and Analysis
Once your plan is implemented, how do you know if it’s working? HQIN will share data collection tools to help you track and trend your improvement related to hand hygiene, terminal cleaning and PPE.

August 25, 2020: QAPI: Everyone Has a Role and a Responsibility
It takes a team to ensure improvement is made and sustained. HQIN will discuss how to engage your team in the quality improvement process in order to hardwire systems, change behavior, reduce gaps and to improve care and compliance.

Click here to register for one or all of these sessions. To learn more about HQIN, visit www.hqin.org.

COVID-19 Prevention Training
