Priming Insulin Pens
During that same call, CMS also reported they have observed a lack of staff priming insulin pens, prior to each use and after changing the needle. If insulin pens are not primed to remove the air from the needle and cartridge, residents may not get the correct amount of insulin. Manufacturer instructions include directions related to this.
